IP Protection

IP1NICTA helps researchers formulate an IP strategy for their projects, with input from in-house legal and business development professionals. Researchers are encouraged to update this strategy on a regular basis, with the intent that the IP in their research outcomes should be:

  • In a suitable form to sustain a competitive advantage
  • Identifiable and transferable without complications

NICTA researchers receive advice about basic IP protection measures and pitfalls so they can identify valuable IP, understand the implications of their actions (and those of others) and confidently engage with industry.

NICTA researchers understand that their research outcomes will be more attractive to industry and more likely to be used, if the relevant IP rights have been comprehensively documented and protected.

NICTA employs an in-house IP Counsel to ensure quick identification and protection of IP. The Learning and Development curriculum has numerous IP components to ensure NICTA staff have a sophisticated grasp of the:

  • Identification and exploitation of IP rights
  • External IP landscape
  • Relative position of their own research in that landscape
