The Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator the Hon. Stephen Conroy, will officially attend and address NICTA’s annual technology showcase, Techfest, in Canberra on 1 May 2008.
Senator Conroy will meet with researchers and view demonstrations from over 20 research projects being undertaken at NICTA, Australia’s Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Research Centre of Excellence.
The projects will display NICTA researcher’s outstanding research across a number of business areas including Biomedical and Life Sciences, Intelligent Transport Systems, Safety and Security, Environmental Management, Mobile Systems and Services and Software Infrastructure.
Techfest 2008, which will be held at NICTA’s Canberra Research Laboratory, is an opportunity for NICTA to showcase its leading-edge technology to the business and research communities, as well as venture capital companies and potential partners. It is an excellent opportunity for industry to investigate collaborations and develop commercial opportunities.
In the last two years NICTA has spun out four companies and signed nine commercial licensing deals with local small and medium companies and multinationals.
This year’s Techfest which will kick off at 9am on 1 May and will be attended by industry representatives.
Some of the world-class research on display will include:
• Peer to Peer: NICTA has developed software which can revolutionise the virtual world and online gaming experience.
• InterfereX: Current broadband wireless communications is expensive due to inherent interference which limits range and throughput. InterfereX solves these problems, thus lowering the total cost of ownership for wireless operators.
• Goanna: This project is developing a new fast, scalable and precise software solution that detects software bugs and code vulnerabilities automatically at development time.
• Spectral Image Source Mapping Systems: The SISM project capitalises on spectral imaging opportunities arising from new camera technologies in and beyond the visible spectrum, in biosecurity, ecology and agriculture.
• SuperCom: Many complex systems consist of simple components which are combined and organised to provide a service, such as electricity supply. Adequate supervision software is required to accurately monitor the system and diagnose problems. This project develops efficient algorithms and tools to improve performance of these systems.
