NICTA, Australia's Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Research Centre of Excellence, today announced the extension of CEO Dr David Skellern's contract for a further two years, until March 2011.

NICTA has been headed by Dr Skellern since May 2005. "Over the last three and a half years, the NICTA Board has been extremely impressed with Dr Skellern's performance as CEO," said NICTA Chairman Mr Neville Stevens, AO. "His energy, experience and sheer enthusiasm for Australian ICT research and innovation make him the ideal leader for this young organisation. The Board is pleased to extend Dr Skellern's contract to 2011." Dr Skellern's previous contract had been due to expire in March 2009.

"ICT is crucial toAustralia's future because it underpins innovation across the economy," said Dr Skellern. "I firmly believe that Australia can build a strong, dynamic culture of ICT innovation and I am happy to have the opportunity to lead NICTA's talented and dedicated people in our part of that enterprise," he added. Dr Skellern plans to consolidate the gains NICTA has made in recent years and to further heighten the organisation's international standing as an ICT research centre of excellence.

Since Dr Skellern was first appointed CEO, NICTA has produced four successful spin-out companies. Its research program has resulted in world-class outcomes. Internationally, NICTA has gained a role in several projects funded through the European Commission's prestigious Seventh Framework Program for Research and Technological Development (FP7).

"The Board is delighted with NICTA's progress under Dr Skellern's stewardship," said Mr Stevens, "NICTA is fortunate to have such a respected researcher and entrepreneur at its helm."
