George Campbell

During his early career Mr George Campbell has held a number of senior positions in the trade union and labor movements. These have included National Secretary of the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union (1988 – 1996), Senior Vice-President of the ACTU (1993 – 1997) and National Executive member of the Australian Labor Party (1986 – 2004).

In addition he served on a number of government boards including the Australian Manufacturing Council (1991 – 1996) as Deputy Chair, the National Investment Council (1993 – 1996), the Economic Planning Advisory Council (1991 – 1994) and the Telecommunications Industry Development Authority (1991 – 1996).

George Campbell became a member of the Australian Senate from 1997 until 2008 for the Australian Labor Party. During this time he held the positions of Opposition Parliamentary Secretary for Manufacturing (2001 – 2004) and Opposition Senate Whip (2004 – 2008).

Throughout his career George Campbell sought to find ways to improve Australia’s economic performance particularly in the fields of industry development and manufacturing.

During his time as a member of the Telecommunications Industry Development Authority George Campbell had a particular interest in how Information and Communications Technology could be utilized to improve the competitiveness of manufacturing.

George Campbell has authored and co-authored a series of publications which include ‘Manufacturing An Innovative Australia’, ‘Why Manufacturing Matters’, ‘The State of Manufacturing’ and ‘ALP Policy Options – Manufacturing’.

George Campbell was awarded the Order of Australia Medal in 2009.
