Eric Choi

Principal Research Engineer

Previous Positions

Dr. Choi was appointed as an Associate Consultant at the Hong Kong Productivity Council from 1990 to 1992. He joined the Motorola Australian Research Centre in 1995 and was a key member in establishing the Speech Technology Laboratory there. Since then, he had been working on various research issues related to speech recognition, speaker verification and multimodal user interface.

Dr. Choi accepted his Principal Research Engineer position with NICTA in January 2004.

Qualifications

Dr. Choi was graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1986 where he received a Bachelor of Science (First Class) in Electronics. He received his PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Sydney in 1996. His PhD thesis was titled Spectral Transformation for Speaker Adaptation in HMM based Speech Recognition.

Research Interests

Dr. Choi's research interests include human-machine interaction, multimodal user interface, robust speech and speaker recognition, user modeling, statistical signal processing, statistical machine learning, and knowledge extraction.

NICTA Projects

Dr. Choi is currently involved in the project entitled Decision Support for Incident Management (DSIM) which aims to enhance the quality of decision support and enable real-time adaptation of systems and processes to improve efficiency and reduce procedural cognitive load on human operators. The adaptive decision support is characterized by its ability to measure unobtrusively the mental effort expended by human operators in real time and manage the cognitive load actively in order to achieve joint human-system optimization. The unobtrusive aspect is achieved by capturing the multimodal data streams that generated during the human-system interactions.

Affiliations

Dr. Choi is affiliated with the University of Sydney as an Honorary Associate and the University of New South Wales as a Conjoint Senior Lecturer.
