John Markham

Senior Researcher
Victoria Research Laboratory

NICTA Projects

Dr John Markham is working on two projects in the biomedical and life sciences area within NICTA’s Victorian Research Laboratory. The first, MIDAS, is a collaboration with the Hodgkin Lab at Walter and Eliza Hall Institute to develop a system to automatically analyse time lapse microscope image sequences. The second is in genomics, specifically looking at analysing next generation sequencing data to aid in understanding of and vaccination against bacterial and viral pathogens.

Previous Positions

In 2006 Dr Markham was hired by the Hodgkin laboratory at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute to work on stochastic models of lymphocyte proliferation. He then moved over to NICTA as part of a collaboration between the two.

Prior to that he was employed at Telstra Research Laboratories where he worked in a wide range of areas including video indexing and retrieval, video compression, video QoS measurement and location based internet services.

Qualifications

Dr Markham received a BEng(Electronic) from the Swinburne Institute of Technology; after working in the electronic publishing industry, he returned to the University of Melbourne to complete a BSc(Hons) majoring in physics. He then completed a PhD at Melbourne in an area of theoretical computational physics called lattice gauge theory.

Research Interests

His current interests can broadly be described as developing interdisciplinary methods to aid understanding of biological systems. At the cell level this includes stochastic models that characterise cells involved in the immune response. At the sub-cellular level this includes techniques for extracting meaningful biological information from the large volumes of data now available from high throughput sequencing technologies.

Collaboration

Currently, he is involved in collaborations with the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute and the Faculty of Veterinary Science at the University of Melbourne.
